It’s incredibly funny, especially when one looks at recent fashion trends. Want to sell more stuff? Just put birds on anything. Hipsters will be all over it. Want to make something more aesthetically pleasing? Put a bird on it! Not sure what tattoo to get? Put a bird on it.

In my own life, I’ve adopted a similar mantra when it comes to making and mixing alcoholic drinks. Because I prefer sweet drinks, I often find myself trying to find delicious, flavorful additions for my coffee, tea, and occasional soda. I’m not a big proponent of drinking straight alcohol, unless it’s beer, and then I’m very picky about the kind of beer I like to drink.

But if you put a bottle of Dekuyper in front of…

Fan Culture

One of the awesome things going on this week has been the beginning of Femslash February, which is a month-long effort of sorts to emphasize relationships between female characters. Mostly concentrated on Tumblr, it’s a whirlwind of heart-wrenching fanfiction (fan fiction?), carefully crafted sets of .gifs, and even the odd poem. If you don’t mind the occasionally very Not Safe For Work/School picture, I’d recommend searching Tumblr for “femslash february” and letting the excellent stuff that’s being put together wash over you.

In the past few days, I’ve come across a few really interesting works. If you want to have a nice good cry, I really have to recommend this poem inspired by Nakoma and Pocahontas. On the other hand, if you want everything to be cuteness and nothing to ever hurt, you can’t go wrong with some sweetness between Marceline and Princess Bubblegum of “Adventure Time”.

DFTBA
dftba_obamaPresident Obama has done quite a bit of online organizing over the past couple of years — from doing an IAmA on Reddit during the campaign this fall to just yesterday, participating in a Fireside Hangout on Google Plus (a nod to Roosevelt’s fireside chats). Google appears to have selected the additional participants who asked the president a few questions each over the nearly hour long hangout. Among them were John Green, the author of The Fault in Our Stars, Limor Fried, CEO of the small New York-based Adafruit Industries, and Jacky Guerrero, an activist-writer who runs the multilingual and LGBT*-focused Qulture.

Both Fried and Guerrero posed excellent questions about the need for and means of implementing various policies, on topics from software patenting to same-sex couple’s immigration rights. In a very real way, women were central to discussing rather important issues of the day, and…

this is true music very awesome

Velociriot!

When I was seven, my mom gave me her old copy of Spice, the first album by the Spice Girls. I had been too young to realize what that album had meant to the world and, more specifically, to girls. But as I grew up and as I became more aware of pop culture and media representations of girls, I found myself admiring the album on a whole different level than from when I was first given it. There is something so empowering about watching confident, talented ladies preach self-love and independence. In a world that is very much still stuck in the idea that a girl is only as good as the man she’s with, these groups are a necessary counterpoint.

Following the Spice Girls, though, there seemed to be a lull in girl power pop music. The mid-to-late-90s were a great time for this movement. We had groups…

The WordPress.com Blog

We think it’s important that you own the content you create online, which is why we make it simple to import or export all your data — you wrote it it, it’s yours, and you can take it where you’d like. If you want to become a part of the WordPress.com community but have been posting on Tumblr, Blogger, LiveJournal, Posterous, or other services, you can move your whole oeuvre over with a few clicks. (It’s just as easy to leave, but we’d miss you!)

This also means that if you’re blogging with a service that’s phasing out, as Posterous is doing on April 30, it’s easy to keep your site going by setting up a WordPress.com account and importing all your content. (Check out the Posterous blog announcement for more details on the change.)

We know it can be rough leaving a tool that you know and…

Fall
Unknown you speak
I touch with words
And see you breathe
Darkness
Into the light
I surrender
To your power
No commands
Reach
Always there
Though never met
Shake me
To the core
God high
Then I soar
Taste me
Do I know your name?
It brushed me once
Smelled so sweet
You knew
To meet
I ache once more
Always further
I endeavor
Of you
I feel all
Crawl inside
Make me yours
Take this longing
Bless my soul
I submit
I bow
Let pray
For the breathtaking heaven
That surely awaits
